(Cleveland, Ohio) A true champion of Our Lady of the Wayside was honored as recipient at the Our Lady of the Wayside’s 13th Annual Starlight Guardian Humanitarian Award, presented by The Shamrock Companies, during a luncheon hosted by WTAM 1100’s Bill Wills at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven, on Tuesday, August 29, 2017. Former NFL Coach, venture philanthropist, and television & radio host received the award before a capacity crowd of over 600. The event also highlighted the 2017 Eastern Conference Champion and 2016 NBA Champion Cleveland Cavaliers, the 2016 American League Champion Cleveland Indians, and 2016 Calder Cup Champions Cleveland Monsters, for their enduring dedication to the community at-large.

“Coach Sam Rutigliano has earned Wayside’s highest honor because, in addition to distinguishing himself as a Cleveland football legend, he has humbly shared his quiet strength in support of others,” said Terry Davis, President & CEO of Our Lady of the Wayside. “And certainly, the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Monsters are renowned for their triumphs on the court and field. However, they – along with Coach Sam – have championed our community in countless ways.”

The Starlight benefit has raised nearly $3.7 million dollars since it was inaugurated in 2005. This year’s proceeds will fund new Pathways Day Program locations in Cuyahoga and Summit Counties. The agency is grateful for the overwhelming support the Starlight event has generated over the years to provide services for over 800 individuals with disabilities in nearly 85 neighborhood homes in Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Geauga, Medina, Summit and Trumbull Counties.
