A Day To Be Grateful

“My desk phone rang in the afternoon – on a day like any other day - about a year ago.” Chuckles Terry Davis, President & CEO of Our Lady of the Wayside.

Jim Bauer was at the other end of the line with a story.

His sister, Carol Glowe, was a widow who had worked as an assistant manager for 40 years at Cleveland’s Lincoln Electric. After her husband passed away, she closed-up most of the rooms in their Mentor home, living in only one room in the house. “We assumed she was having a tough time making ends meet, so my wife and I would send her a little money now-and-then.”  Sadly, Carol Glowe passed away, and Jim was later sent the paperwork to be the executor of her estate. “I read her lawyer’s letter and nearly fell out of my chair! Carol’s estate totaled $10million, and she was giving just-shy of $1million each to 10 area non-profits.”

Our Lady of the Wayside will be receiving their check Tuesday, April 9th and the proceeds will fund the agency’s Pathways Day Program, and the purchase 4 much-needed wheelchair vans.

To commemorate Carol Glowe’s extraordinary legacy, the agency’s 5 Pathways Program locations – which host over 250 participants with developmental disabilities – are gathering together to throwing a “Glowe” Party for Carol’s family. “Wayside refers to unexpected gifts and donations as ‘Pennies from heaven’ – and certainly this gift is no exception. Carol Glowe’s gift will enable the amazing people with developmental disabilities Wayside supports to enjoy the amazing community we all share. It will provide the chance to go to Guardians games and parks and ice cream stores … but more, it will provide access, and freedom, and wonderful life experiences.”

Sometimes the most extraordinary things happen on day like any other day.
